EM655 - Pump Design and Operation in Shipboard Systems Credits: 3
With the exception perhaps of electric motors, there are typically more pumps in a ship’s machinery spaces (and shore side power plants) than any other type of machine, and the majority of these pumps are usually of the centrifugal type. Despite this, much about centrifugal pump design and operating characteristics is often misunderstood. This course will focus on the design and operation of centrifugal pumps with an emphasis on shipboard applications, which often have requirements not imposed on shore side installations. Topics will include hydraulic and mechanical design principles and modern design techniques, manufacturing techniques, testing methods, installation, and operation. Vibration and noise control and condition monitoring will also be included. In addition, general design features for positive-displacement pumps will be discussed.
