EM665 - Large Bore Natural Gas Spark-Ignition and Dual Fuel Engines

Credits: 3

Energy Security and the price of natural gas has driven a dramatic increase in the use of Natural Gas in reciprocating engines in many power generation industries.  The application of spark-ignition and dual fuel engines span many microgrid applications both onshore and aboard vessels.  The course will cover both the fundamentals of spark ignition and dual fuel engines in operation and application.   The student will learn the principle of operation of spark ignition engines including presentations on both open chamber and prechamber engines (150- 15,000+kW) covering the world’s leading manufacturers.  Modules will include theory, operation, maintenance, performance/system specifications, and application considerations. Dual Fuel engines developed by MaK and Wartsila will also be reviewed with additional discussion of how to integrate into a full propulsion electric drive and some of the challenges faced in actual ship commissioning. The dual fuel section will include a discussion of the World’s first Liquefied Natural Gas Cruise Ship commissioning and integration for fuel propulsion electric drive.
