The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is committed to the development and growth of all Midshipmen, faculty and staff in an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, veteran or military status, or any other status protected by law, and is also free from sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and retaliation. Such behavior creates a demeaning, intimidating, and hostile educational environment that undermines the basic principles of the Academy. It is not accepted or tolerated at our institution. It is the responsibility of all Midshipmen, faculty and staff to refrain from such behavior, to discourage it wherever found and to promptly report any such behavior as required by Academy policy.
The Academy is dedicated to training men and women as future officers in the merchant marine and Armed Forces who must uphold and perpetuate the traditions of an honorable profession. Illegal or inappropriate conduct is corrosive to the cohesiveness, morale and esprit de corps of a military organization or a ship’s company.
All incidents of discrimination, harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and retaliation will be investigated by the Academy or the appropriate investigative agency having jurisdiction of the incident. All involved will be treated with dignity, fairness and respect. If a violation is found, prompt and effective corrective action will be taken.
The Academy provides training, education and awareness to minimize such conduct, as well as support for victims.
