NAUT450 - Advanced Meteorology Credits: 3
This elective course will cover the principles of modern meteorology as is applicable to the marine environment and global transportation and logistics. The course encompasses the following material at the Management Level and builds on the material covered in NAUT240 Meteorology at the Operational Level: Use of synoptic and prognostic charts and forecasts from any source, weather forecasting based on a range of available information, tropical revolving storms (TRS), the origin and movement of main types of floating ice, guiding principles relating to the safety of navigation in ice, conditions leading to ice accretion on ship’s superstructure and remedies available, surface water circulation of the ocean and principal adjoining seas, voyage planning principles with respect to weather conditions and wave height, the formation of sea waves and swell waves, the ability to calculate tidal conditions, and use of nautical publications and information which can be obtained via internet and e-mail on tides and currents. This course satisfies the STCW competencies for Meteorology as defined in Table A-II/2 and as outlined in the U. S. Coast Guard’s NVIC 10-14. The course meets the meteorological training and learning objectives to Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position, and the assessment requirements for Chief Mate and Master licenses applicable to vessels greater than 3000 gross tons. The course satisfies the following Tasks of NVIC 10-14: 7.1.A, 7.2.A, 7.3.A, 7.4.A, 7.4.B, and 7.4.C.
